106. Trust (c) / הבטחה
The ultimate level of trust is to not trust in man at all and to not become upset with anybody, because the one who trusts in Hashem believes with complete faith that all other people are merely messengers from Heaven. God has many agents to bring about pleasant or unpleasant matters, except that “reward [zechus] is brought about through a person of merit [zakkai], and punishment [chovah] through a person of guilt [chayav]” (Shabbos 32a). Even if all the people of the world were to stand together on one side of a scale, united to do harm or to do benefit, while Hashem’s decree stood on the other side of the scale — His decree would outweigh them all. Therefore one who trusts Hashem will not show favor, nor flatter, nor fear anyone; nor will he attempt to gain wealth unjustly, for justice is God’s and He gives each person what he deserves for his benefit and good. These are just some of the aspects of the trait of trust. May Hashem, God help me among His people Yisrael, and may our mouths and hearts match in acting for the sake of Hashem, may He be blessed. Amen, so may it be His will.
