138. The Zohar (b) / זוהר

Thus, it is proper for every individual obtain the book of the holy Zohar and never cease from reading the weekly portion. This is a wonderful method to prevent the Evil Inclination from enticing the person to sit idly and waste time, which is a great evil, as is well known. Let the person do this, and he will be spared: One should accept upon himself to study a set amount every day, such as eighteen chapters of Mishnah a day, the Book of Tehillim, the portion of the Zohar and the like. And when the person does not have the time to complete his daily learning schedule, he should make up for it on another day or during the next month. This way, whenever he has unused time, he can immediately “pay back” for the amount he lost previously. Still, one should be intelligent about the matter from the outset, when setting up his schedule, that he will not be forced to read rapidly which would result in his learning not being worth very much, Heaven forefend. The Sages have already said, “Better a little with comprehension than a lot without comprehension.” And when one learns the secrets of the holy Zohar — in his heart he will know that there are hidden secrets and great depths in all maters, yet one’s body should be pained that he really has no knowledge and understanding whatsoever.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
