147 – The mitzvah of visiting the sick (c) / Part III, Chapter three

When praying for a sick person, if it is in his presence, one may pray in any language because the Shechinah (the Divine Presence) is present at the side of the sick person. But if one is praying elsewhere, one must pray in Lashon HaKodesh (Hebrew), for then it is the ministering angels who bring the prayer before the Holy One, and the angels do not understand other languages.

When praying for a sick person, he or she should be included together with other ill people, and the person praying should pray for a complete recovery “among the other patients of Israel.” By including this patient among all the sick of Israel, the prayer is more readily accepted.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
