156 – Types of chessed that are dependant on speech (a) / Part III, Chapter eight

Until now we have clarified aspects of chessed-kindness that are mainly dependant on deed, either with one’s body or with one’s possessions. We will now clarify aspects of chessed that are dependant on speech.

The primary type of chessed one gives with his speech is when he teaches Torah to others, as in the verse: The Torah of kindness is on her tongue (Mishlei 31:26); which, as our Sages explain, means that the Torah one teaches to others is both “Torah” and “kindness.”

Another type of chessed that is related to speech is when one knows that, for instance, Reuven is angry with Shimon over some matter and one goes and appeases Reuven that he not be angry with Shimon — this is a bestowing of chessed accomplished with his speech.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
