19 – The Mitzvah of Lending / Chapter One

  1. There is no explicit source in Halacha regarding the limits of how much time one must give the borrower to pay back the loan. It seems, however, that this too is dependant on the fortune of the lender. If he can only afford to extend the loan for several days, then he is not obligated to give the loan for any time longer than that. But if he can afford to give the loan for a longer period, then that is what he is obliged to do.

G. There is no limit to this mitzvah; [it is required] even a hundred times. Just as a shopkeeper does not get annoyed with customers who repeatedly come into his store to purchase merchandise — on the contrary, he is happy to greet his customers who bring him his livelihood — so, too, the lender must not think “How bothersome is this borrower with all his borrowing and repaying!” Instead,  he should know that every time he gives a loan he fulfills a positive commandment of the Torah (d’Oraisa), and in its merit he will receive blessing from Hashem, as it is written, Repeatedly give him, and do not feel bad about giving it, since Hashem your God will then bless you in all your endeavors, no matter what you do (Devarim 15:10).

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
