206. Right (Side)
Chazal said, “All the turnings that one makes should be only towards the right hand side”. When one puts on one’s shoes, one should put the right one on first. When one is putting on one’s Tallis, one should be careful to hold both sides with his right hand, and only then should the right hand give one side of the Tallis to the left hand, after which he should wrap himself in it. When one washes one’s hands one should also be careful to take the washing cup in one’s right hand and pass it on to his left hand, and wash one’s right hand first. In all affairs one should be very particular to honor the right hand and give it precedence, for these are ancient matters. He should think at this time of the verse, “The right hand of Hashem is exalted, the right hand of Hashem creates victory!”. When lying down one should be especially careful to lie on one’s left hand side, so that the right hand side will be on top. Similarly, when he goes up to the Torah scroll, he should go on the right hand side. The same is true for all other similar matters.
