The magnitude of the obligation to honor one’s parents is well-known, as the Torah equates it with the obligation to honor Hashem, and he who is lax in their honor has committed a great crime. Nowadays, because of our sins, the number of rebellious children has increased, and they find it easy not to honor their parents, and regularly go against their wishes. There are even destructive children who are so lax in their honor that they are willing to cause them great pain. Woe to children who cause such things to their parents, woe to them on the Day of Judgment, for Hashem will bring them to justice for each act that he has done to transgress the will of his Creator or the will of his parents and has caused them pain, and for causing his parents to become angry. He will also receive part of the punishment in this world, for as he did so shall he be done by, as his own sons will act towards him in the same way that he acted towards his parents, measure for measure.
