248. Commandments (4)

A man who wants life, should not follow the bad behavior of the masses, and not be jealous of the sinners. Instead, his mind should be filled with fear of Hashem all day. The young men should not say that youth is the time to play and be happy with excitement and enjoyment and to run after every temptation, as youth comes only once in a lifetime, and when we become old we will keep the Torah and its commandments. This idea is emptiness and untrue for many reasons: 1) A person does not know the length of his own life and what will happen each day. It is possible that tomorrow will come and he will be dead, for death does not procrastinate. 2) About one who says “I will sin and then repent”, the Mishnah says that heaven does not allow him to repent, and even when he becomes old he will not leave his evil ways. 3) Hashem will bring each person to justice even for the days of youth which have passed, and for each time that he did not do what he should have done and instead followed his temptations, and the sentence for having committed sins when young when he was healthy and strong and he could have used all of his strength to repent and correct his ways is very strict if instead he used that very strength to chase after every enticement.

It follows that the nation of Hashem, who are the servants of Hashem, small together with big, old together with young, should come together to strengthen ourselves and consider the honor of our Creator, and have pity on our own souls and flee from all sin and chase after every good deed with our hearts, souls, strength and money, and Hashem will then help us for heaven helps those who come to purify themselves.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
