There is an extra problem with one who indulges in overeating, as Chazal said that “Everything which a person eats in the weekdays over and above that which he needs to be healthy for the service of Hashem, adds power to the evil forces and inclinations to cause him to sin, and also wastes the valuable time. All of the pleasures and enjoyments of this world are hot air and evilness of spirit, empty things which have no reality.
It follows that one who really wants life, should strengthen himself and manage on a small amount of eating and drinking, and when buying houses and clothes he should choose the middle path according to the blessing that Hashem has given him. He should not follow the path of the extras, and should instead give the rest of his money to charity for those who work in Torah. By doing this he will acquire life in the next world. We find with King Dovid, that he minimized his pleasures and enjoyments, and that which he saved by doing this he gave to the building of the temple and gathered huge riches for this purpose.
