26 – The Mitzvah of Lending / Chapter Two

  1. A person who earns his livelihood from taking interest on loans [such as from loans to gentiles or to Jews through a heter iska (which is actually a business partnership)] is nevertheless obligated to give interest-free loans to poor people — to the extent that he can afford.
  2. A Torah scholar who is occupied studying Torah, is obligated to interrupt his learning in order to fulfill this mitzvah, if it cannot be done by anyone else. It makes no difference why there is no one else available; the same rule applies whether those others cannot give the loan or whether they simply do not want to give the loan.
