28 – The Mitzvah of Lending / Chapter Three

  1. This mitzvah, of giving loans, applies to any Jew who needs a loan, whether that person is poor or rich, man or woman, adult or child [that is, to the child’s guardian so that the lender does not lose his money] — as it is written: When you lend money to My people (Shemos 22:24), which includes anybody who is part of “My people.”
  2. Even someone who has stopped keeping a mitzvah because of his desires, is nevertheless still considered part of Klal Yisrael, as long as he still believes the Thirteen Principles of Faith. It is therefore a mitzvah to have compassion for him and to do acts of kindness for him in his time of need. But if it is known that he needs the money for some prohibited use, then it is certainly forbidden to give it to him, and one who would give it to him would be called “an accomplice to sinners.”
