Laziness is a terrible character-trait, both for the body and the soul. It is a gift of Hashem that there are some people who are naturally lively and abundant of deed, swift to perform and thereby gain, and others are by nature heavy and lazy. Just think, for in worldly matters laziness is a bad characteristic, but it is not a sin or iniquity, and if Hashem has favored a person with wealth, laziness will not be noticed very much, as his work will be done by others. As regards spiritual matters, on the other hand, laziness is a terrible illness, and even if it the nature of a person to be lazy, the fact that it is in his nature is not an excuse to save him from having committed a sin, as a person can change his nature through hard work and effort, and by accustoming himself to go to the other extreme he will reach the middle path. A person is in control of his moods, and is able to do anything that he really wants, and the reward is in direct proportion to the pain, and he should control himself by giving himself fines if he does not keep to it. A person should find ways and means of becoming light as an eagle, and run like a deer to perform the will of his Father in heaven.
