392. Voice

“The voice is the voice of Ya’akov!”, and the sound of Torah has very great effects as it rises and splits open the heavens themselves. The sound of Torah is very important before Hashem. How mistaken are those who learn when muttering or study a holy book without their voices being heard, as they lose much goodness. This is comparable to one who could earn one thousand gold coins and instead decides only to earn five hundred. He also causes himself harm as he will forget that which he has learnt, as Chazal say. Chazal explain the verse “Ki Chaim Heim Lemotz’eihem” (For they [the words of Torah] are life to those who find them!”) as if it said “Ki Chaim Heim Lemotzieihem” (For they [the words of Torah] are life to those who take them out!”) which means that they are life to those who enunciate them.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
