416. Speech

The prophet says “You tired Hashem out with your words!”, and Chazal explained that Hashem said “At the time of the creation of the world there was no fatigue for Me, (as it says “The G-d of the world; He created the edges of the world; He will not become tired nor fatigued!”) when do I become “tired” (using anthropomorphism)? when a person indulges in idle speech before me, that is the worst thing of all.” Woe to a person who causes this to happen to the Creator of the world. If even about idle speech such things are written, how much more does this apply to forbidden speech that a person should be afraid and horrified! A person who is Jewish and believes in the holy words of Chazal that they (Chazal) are “true” and that their words are true should keep their words about speech written and permanently placed in his pocket as a reminder “between his eyes” (a reference to Tefillin) and he should reflect on them each day as perhaps he will be able to withdraw himself and guard his mouth a little at a time until he acquires the character-trait of silence. A method of achieving this is that he forbids himself to join together with the groups of ignorant and idle people who gather in the synagogues, and instead he should gather with those who fear Hashem and think about His Name, who worry about their own souls and the honor of their Creator and speak only good things; How good is their lot!

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
