42 – The Laws of Paying Wages / Chapter Nine

A.The time to pay a “day worker” (in this context, one who works during the day) is during the night [that follows the day he worked]. If the person who hired him does not pay on time, he transgresses the prohibition of Do not let a worker’s wages remain with you overnight until morning(Vayikra 19:13).

The time to pay a “night worker” is during the day [that follows the night he worked]. One must be careful to pay the worker before sunset, and if he missed sunset, he should at least try to pay before nightfall [when the stars come out]. One who does not pay on time transgresses the prohibition of You must give him his wage on the day it is due, and not let the sun set with him waiting for it (Devarim 24:15).
