43 – The Laws of Paying Wages / Chapter Nine

B. The rule stated above, that the time of payment for a “day worker” is all night, and the time of payment for a “night worker” is all day, applies only when the employee worked all night or all day, but if he worked for a few hours and finished his work in the middle of the day, the employer must pay him by the end of that day. And if he worked a few hours during the night, the employer must pay him by the end of that night.

C. The obligation to pay a worker on time is not only when the person was hired for a few hours but also if he was hired to do a small job, worth only a peruta. Some say that all these laws apply even if the person was hired to work on a job worth even less than a peruta.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
