445. The Name of Heaven (1)

One who mentions the Name of Hashem in vain transgresses the negative commandment of “You shall not mention the Name of Hashem your G-d in vain!”.

One must fear the respected and awesome Name so that we only mention it when reading the Torah, praying and making blessings. Even when making blessings one must be especially careful not to make a blessing without a reason or to make an unnecessary blessing as if he does he will have mentioned the Name of Hashem in vain and will have transgressed the above commandment.

Included in this level of care is that one may not say these blessings and prayers too quickly (in a “snatched” manner) as it is possible that in such a case he has not fulfilled his obligation and this results in his having mentioned the Name of Hashem in vain, apart from the fact that he remains without the prayer or blessing and ends up deriving benefit from this world without having made a blessing. When mentioning the Name of Hashem he should clothe himself with awe as all of the heavenly angels tremble and are afraid when they mention the Holy and awesome Name of Hashem. How good it would be if from time to time he would pay attention with his heart and eyes to see the arrangement of the royal crown and the holiness of the prayers of the Day of Atonement so that he will learn to fear the respected and awesome Name and will know and appreciate a little of the honor of Hashem in its place.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
