449. Diligence (2)

This is also true when applied to prayer and supplications, that the man who is diligent to pour out his speech and cries out supplications every day, in the end his prayer will give forth fruit and will be accepted before Hashem. This is especially true when he prays fir heavenly affairs or for the sake of heaven. The Sefer Chasidim writes also that even if someone does not have the merits that Hashem should fulfil his request, when he makes a lot of supplications or request heavenly things, Hashem will surely listen to his cry. Seeing that this is the case, fortunate is the man who listens and stays diligently by the gates of delving into and studying the books of ethics (Mussar) and pours out his heart before Hashem, a righteous man in the land will be complete by this.

The Midrash already says that the Torah itself says “If you forsake me for one day, I will leave you for two days!”, and we can only hope and wish that by diligence and much hard work perhaps we will be able to reach and understand a little of the wisdom of the Torah and the fear of heaven and the perfection of our character traits, for we have become very poor in this orphaned generation, and especially when regarding the work on one’s own thoughts to fear and love the respected and awesome Name of Hashem and to cleave to It.

Also, to think thoughts that lead to humility and perfection of one’s character-traits is a work which needs much diligence and hard work. This was the great characteristic of the forefathers of the world, our teacher Moshe, King David and all of the holy people who ever existed, in that they would stay diligently working on thinking holy thoughts and tremendous cleaving to Hashem all day and all night. Chazal have already said that a person is obligated to say “When will my deeds and actions reach the level of the deeds and actions of Avraham, Yitzchak and Ya’akov?”. Even though we have become very poor (in our spiritual abilities), we must do everything which is in our power not to allow our minds to become empty and Hashem our G-d will help us.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
