461. Intelligence

A person will be praised according to his intelligence so that he should have intelligence in   good way to be able to go on the correct paths and to guard the ways if the righteous, and he should conduct himself with good and honest character traits in the eyes of Hashem and people and he should know how to interact with each person according to his specific characteristics and he should do everything that is good and keen far away from everything that is evil so that the intelligence of the mind is like the ruler of all of the internal and external limbs and he will rule over them to guide them and to lead them on the true path and they will leave their bad habits and the deeds which should not be done and with the bad character-traits and everything that the straight and clear thinking mind wants to do so shall the limbs follow so that they do not rebel against his will. The inclination should not be allowed to rule over the intelligence and the intelligence should not acquire a master for itself.

One who is lacking in intelligence is a source of great evil as the way of a foolish man is straight in his own eyes. Such a person should at least go to wise men and make himself dusty with the dust of their feet and drink their words thirstily as well as learning or listening to learning as maybe there is hope that he will acquire a trustworthy level of intelligence.

Even someone who has intelligence will find that it is good for those who do and conduct themselves according to their own straight intelligence as opposed to someone who does not follow his intelligence and wisdom with which Hashem has favored him, when the more that he adds knowledge, the more will he increase his pain, as deliberate sins will appear to him like accidental ones. With this a wise man will be praised with his wisdom, to use his intelligence to ponder about and know Hashem and to do that which is good and straight.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
