48 – The Laws of Paying Wages / Chapter Nine

  1. A person who hired workers must be careful to not spend money on buying merchandise if he knows that as a result he will have no money left with which to pay his workers—even if the employees have not yet asked for their wages. All the more so is it forbidden for him to spend his money on merchandise once the workers asked to be paid. If he did so, he violates the mitzvah of On that day shall you pay his hire (Devarim24:15).

It is proper for anyone with common sense to avoid spending money on merchandise even before the employees’ work is done, if as a result he will not have the funds with which to pay them.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
