489. Addition

Hashem commanded us to add to the holy days “The addition (of time) on to Shabbos” and “The addition (of time) on to Yom Kippur” by taking from the mundane and adding it to the holy.  They were not commanded only to teach about themselves but to teach about an entire category – that a person is obligated to add to the commandments of the Torah.  As the verse says explicitly “and you shall keep my safeguard and our Sages have explained “make a safeguard for My safeguard”. This means that a person must flee a hundred measures of that which is permissible in order not to enter one gate of that which is forbidden. It says “you shall be holy” and our Sages have explained “You must be separate.  Sanctify yourself with that which is permitted to you.” A person is obligated to be continually moving upwards in adding to holiness every day.  He must never be satisfied, just as one who loves money will never be satisfied by money.  The additions will show that he serves out of love for Hashem as many waters of emptiness of this world will not be able to extinguish the love.  The books of ethics have already written that the good point and advantage of addition is when it is added on to the main point not that the addition should nullify the main point.  One needs an accurate and just measuring tool and scales, sometimes to add whereas sometimes the annulment of the Torah is the keeping of it.  There is no difference between one who does more and one who does less as long as they direct their hearts to Heaven.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
