K (cont.). As explained, the employer only transgresses bal talin (“a worker’s wages shall not remain…” [Vayikra 19:13]) if the worker asked to be paid and the employer has the necessary funds. However, even if he did not have the funds when the worker asked to be paid but later came into money, he is obligated to take the money to the worker, or to notify the worker that he can come receive his pay.
Similarly, if one rented an animal or any item for another person for some use, and he completed that use, the renter must be careful to pay the rental fee immediately, even if the owner did demand payment, since in this case, the reason the owner did not ask to be paid is not because he doesn’t mind postponing the payment but because he simply does not know that the renter has finished using the item.
