53 – The Laws of Paying Wages / Chapter Ten

A. A person who hired a worker for piecework (where the pay is for the finished product), such as he gave the worker a garment to alter, and the fellow completed the alteration — as long as the garment is in the hands of the worker, the employer does not transgress any prohibition. But once he returned the altered garment, even if it is in the middle of the day, he must pay the worker that very day. If the sun set and he failed to pay the worker, he transgresses both On that day shall you pay his hire(Devarim 24:15) and the sun shall not set upon him (ibid.). And if the worker returned the garment at night, he must pay him that night; if morning came and the employer failed to pay him, the employer transgresses A worker’s wage shall not remain with you overnight (Vayikra 19:13).

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
