72 – Bestowing Kindness / Part II, Chapter Five (d)

Another benefit gained by doing acts of kindness is that it protects the person from the Evil Inclination. As our Sages said: “Fortunate is Israel, for when they are engaged in Torah and acts of kindness, their Inclination is placed in their control instead of them being controlled by the Inclination.” The reason for this is that the Evil Inclination overcomes the person in two manners. The first is with relation to the person’s mind; it distracts the person’s mind with all sorts of vanity. The second is with relation to the person’s actions; it get the person to become accustomed to do actions that go against the will of Hashem. But one who is engrossed in Torah and acts of kindness is protected on both fronts. Being engrossed in Torah, which is the words of the Living God, sanctifies the person’s mind, and doing acts of kindness sanctifies the limbs of the body, for they are busy with the service of the King of the Universe. The person thus gains that the Evil Inclination cannot lead him to sin at all.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
