Scripture writes: For we are like sojourners [geirim] before You (I Divrei Hayamim 29:15), and it is written, Hear my prayer, Hashem, give ear to my outcry, be not mute to my tears; for I am a sojourner with You (Tehillim  39:13). This is a fundamental principal in all of Judaism:  A person should not let himself be drawn to luxuries, delicacies, elaborate clothing or ornate houses. Rather, one should view his life like a traveler lodging at a hotel on the road — be satisfied with whatever comes your way and make your destination the World to Come, for that is one’s true home.

Even what one does partake of This World should be with the aim of it being an aid in the journey to the World to Come. All of one’s actions should be for the sake of Heaven and he should not add more than the essentials needed for spiritual endeavors. Do not let the Evil Inclination take you off course with all sorts of false claims and arguments, for that is its way — it portrays indulgences as though they are absolute essentials for the service of Hashem. One needs a discerning mind to tell the difference between what one needs and what one wants so as to not be fooled by the Inclination.

“My brothers and my nation, take this sefer Torah, and with this, and like this learn well, so that you should have it good; listen and enliven your soul, and achieve gladness and joy in this world and the world to come” (From the author’s intro.)
