76 – Bestowing Kindness / Part II, Chapter Six (c)

Let a person contemplate this: How can I face the Holy One and ask of Him, “Establish peace, goodness, blessing, life, graciousness, kindness, and compassion” etc. if I myself do not have compassion for other people and do not do acts of kindness for them? In truth, any request that one has of Hashem is very difficult to accept if the person does not himself act in the way of kindness and compassion — especially in matters of parnassah (livelihood) where a person is dependant only on His kindness and constantly prays for it, such as, “He sustains the living with kindness” etc. But when a person accustoms himself to this trait, his prayer will certainly be accepted before Hashem, may He be blessed, and his request will be fulfilled. As our Sages of blessed memory said: “One who does acts of kindness can be assured that his prayers will be answered” (Midrash Shocheir Tov, 65).

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
