77 – Bestowing Kindness / Part II, Chapter Six (d)

The benefits of doing kindness are gained from helping even an ordinary Jew. But if one does kindness to a Torah scholar, such as extending a loan to him which he will use to generate sustenance and will thereby be free to study Hashem’s Torah — his merit is very great and as a result he will also merit to sit amongst the Sages in the Heavenly Academy. Our Sages taught this in connection with the verse, Only you, the ones who remained attached to God your Lord, are all alive today (Devarim 4:4): Is it possible to be attached to Hashem? Does it not say, God your Lord is like a consuming fire (ibid. v. 14)? Rather, whoever marries off his daughter to a Torah scholar, does business with a Torah scholar’s merchandise so that he will be free to toil in Torah], or shares his wealth with Torah scholars is considered by the Torah as though he attached himself to the Divine Presence” (Kesubos 111b).

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
