97 – Bestowing Kindness / Part II, Chapter Thirteen (c)

Our Sages said: Just as one’s sustenance is determined on Rosh Hashanah, so too one’s losses are determined on Rosh Hashanah. If the person merits it, he will give this money to the poor and thereby use it for mitzvos. But if the person does not merit it, he will lose his money in some other manner. The underlying issue is that every person must suffer hardship because of his sins, and the Holy One in His kindness exchanges his hardship for a financial loss. Now, the person who was meritorious suffers this loss through a mitzvah and so he gains a mitzvah. And, also, since no loss can come from the mitzvah he performed, then surely Hashem will restore this loss from some other quarter. But if the person is not meritorious, he will lose his money in some bad manner. It thus emerges that no loss ever comes to a person as a result of tzedakah or acts of kindness.

He has told you, O Man, what is good, and what Hashem asks of you; but to do justice, to love loving-kindness, and to walk discreetly with your G-d” (Micha 6:8)
