Chomas Hadas / Ch. 9 – 72

Our Sages taught us that there are four groups who do not merit experiencing the Divine: the scoffers, the liars, the flatterers, and the slanderers. From this we see that whoever is not in one of these four categories will merit the Divine experience, the ultimate spiritual pleasure, as our Sages described, ‘Tsaddikim sit with crowns on their heads, and enjoy the Divine glory’. A Jew should prepare himself for this monumental experience, so that when Hashem will speak to him in learning he should not sit dumb. Our Sages said that Hashem says, ‘I put so much effort in creating you and retaining you, did you read and learn [Torah]?’ If he answers in the affirmative, Hashem asks him to repeat what he learned, and if he did not learn it well he will be mortally embarrassed.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
