Even though every Torah learning has some positive effect on the person learning, if a person purifies himself and is careful in his actions, the positive effect will be precisely to the same degree he prepared himself to receive it. That is why the previous generation’s Torah was so much loftier, because they prepared themselves properly. And it says of Yonasan Ben Uziel that when he learned Torah birds flying above him would get burnt from the tremendous holiness of his learning.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
