Hilchos Yichud-Seclusion / Babysitters – 30

  1. Questions of yichud-seclusion often arise when a babysitter is hired to watch children. For example, based on the rules presented above, a girl of 12 years  or older may not be alone while watching a boy of 9 years or older. Similarly, a 13 year old boy (or older) may not be left alone watching a girl 3 years and older. If there is an additional child in the house who is of the age to act as a shomer-chaperon [i.e., between the ages of 5 and 9] and it is during the daytime, it is allowed; but during the night, when children are usually asleep, two chaperons are required.

2.    It is proper to be strict and not allow a boy even under the age of 13 [but older than 9] watch over a girl who is 3 or older. Similarly, a girl under 12 should not watch a boy above the age of 9. (Shevet Halevi V:202)

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
