- If one’s father requested a drink of water from the son and at the same time his mother also asked for a drink, the child should serve the father first and then the mother, because his mother is also obligated to honor her husband. However, if one’s parents are divorced, the child’s obligation towards them is equal and he can serve first whomever he chooses (Shulchan Aruch, YD 240:14).
2. A parent that instructs a child to transgress some sin—whether it is to violate a positive commandment or to transgress a negative commandment—the child is forbidden to heed the parent, as it is written: Every man: Your mother and father shall you revere… I am Hashem, your God (Vayikra 19:3) — you are all obligated to guard My honor (ibid. 240:15).
