Introduction / Negative Commandments (9)

1. When one speaks lashon hara or rechilus, he transgresses the prohibition, You shall not go as a gossipmonger among your people, even though the information is true.

Rechilus is when one tells Reuben what Shimon did or said badly about him.

Lashon Hara is negative talk about another.

A person who says something false about another it is called Motzi Shem Ra.

2. One who either speaks or accepts one of the above, transgresses the prohibition, Do not accept a vain report, this prohibition includes both speaking or accepting lashon hara.

 

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
