Introduction / Positive Commandments (18)

  1. One who speaks lashon hara, violates the commandment, Remember what Hashem, your God, did to Miriam. Miriam was afflicted with tzaraas (leprosy). This despite the following facts: she spoke about her brother Moshe whom she loved dearly and risked her life to save him, she didn’t speak about him derogatorily she only equated him to the other prophets, it was spoken in his absence and only to her brother Aharon, in addition to this Moshe was not hurt by her words. How much more careful should one be not to commit the sin of lashon hara.

2. One who speaks or accepts lashon hara, violates the commandment, And you shall love you fellow as yourself, as one who truly loves his fellow, will not speak or accept lashon hara about him.

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
