Laws of Blessings – 41

  1. The Borei Nefashos (“Who creates numerous living things”) after-blessing is a praise to the Holy One for His creating Man’s necessities, such as food and water. This idea is included in the word וְחֶסְרוֹנָן, “with their deficiencies.” We likewise thank Him for the various beneficial things that  He created for humans, though they are not necessities. This second idea is included in the phraseעַל כָּל מַה שֶּׁבָּרָאתָ לְהַחֲיוֹת בָּהֶם נֶפֶשׁ כָּל חָי, “for all that You have created with which to maintain the life of every being” (Shulchan Aruch and Mishnah Berurah207).

2.     One who is unsure whether or not he ate the quantity that requires an after-blessing, should not recite the blessing because of the doubt. It is, however, proper to eat or drink again the required amount in order to recite the after-blessing, and he should have in mind to cover his original eating (Mishnah Berurah and Kaf HaChaim ibid.).

The wise man says: I shall learn two halachot today, and two tomorrow, until I learn the entire Torah entirely… (Vayikra Rabba)
