Laws of Lashon Hara / 10: 5-6 (75)

  1. It is permitted to speak about one who speaks lashon hara about his fellow, when the conditions for speaking for a constructive purpose are met. This is on condition that his friend already knows that the subject spoke lashon hara about him, if not it will eventually reach the subject’s ears which is rechilus, and it is therefore forbidden.

6. If one assumes that the sinner will continue to pass on the lashon hara, and he is able to protect the subject by preceding the sinner and telling people that so-and-so is spreading lashon hara about so-and-so, and that what he’s saying is untrue, he is permitted to do so, even when the subject is unaware that someone has spoken lashon hara about him.

“Who is the man who desires life… guard your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceitfully” (Tehillim 34:13-14)
