Mitzvah 115) – That the court may not carry out the death penalty on the Shabbos

Torah Portion: Vayikra

If one’s offering is a burnt-offering… (Vayikra 1:3).

It is a positive commandment to process the burnt-offering (Olah) in accord with its prescribed rules, as it is written, If one’s offering is a burnt-offering  etc. (Vayikra 1:3).

Among the roots of the mitzvah is the same idea presented above (Mitzvah #95) regarding the commandment to construct the Holy Temple: It is not for Hashem’s sake but for the sake of humans — that through physical actions, the hearts of people are perfected and purified, and then they will be ready to receive the good from Hashem, may He be blessed.

The laws of the mitzvah include: The offering was slaughtered in the Courtyard of the Temple; it is permissible for even non-kohanim to slaughter the animal, but from the stage of receiving the blood and onward, only kohanim were allowed to process the offering.

This commandment applies when the Holy Temple stood, to kohanim, who are the ones qualified to serve in the Holy Temple. A kohen that transgressed this and did not prepare it in accord with the procedure outlined here, violated this positive commandment.
