Mitzvah 278) That an impure priest may not serve in the Temple

Parshas Emor

“And they shall keep themselves away from the holy things of the children of Yisrael, and they will not profane My Holy Name!” (Vayikra 22:2)

It is a negative commandment that a priest may not serve in the Temple when he is impure, as it says “And they shall keep themselves away from the holy things of the children of Yisrael, and they will not profane My Holy Name!”.

Amongst the roots of the commandment are that which we have written in many places that for the honor of the Temple and the elevation of its service we must keep away anything which is not at its epitome of perfection. The advantage of a person being pure needs no explanation.

This commandment applies to priests when the Temple was standing, and one who transgresses it receives heavenly death as a punishment.
