Mitzvah 295) Not to perform an act which contains in it a profaning of the Name of Hashem

Parshas Emor

“And you shall not profane My holy Name!” (Vayikra 22:32)

It is a negative commandment that we have been withheld from profaning the Name of Hashem, as it says “And you shall not profane My holy Name!”.  This is the opposite of the commandment to sanctify His holy Name. In this sin there are many details: 1) One who has been asked in a time of religious persecution to transgress any commandment, in order to draw him away from his religion. A similar example is if even when it is not a period of religious persecution and he is asked to serve another god, commit adultery or murder. In all of the above cases he is obligated to give away his life and not commit the sin. If he committed the sin, he has publicly profaned the Name of Hashem and has committed a very great sin. 2) A person who commits a sin which he had no inclination to do or benefit thereof, and he does it only to anger his Creator, has profaned the Name of Hashem. 3) A man well-known for his good deeds and kindnesses who does something which the general public consider to be a sin, (this means that he performs an act unfitting for a man of his level of piety) even though the act is actually permitted, has profaned the Name of Hashem.
