Mitzvah 478) Not to act hard hearted to a poor person

Parshas Re’eh

“you shall not harden your heart” (Devarim 15,7)

It is a negative commandment, not to refrain from kindness and charity amongst our brothers, the children of Israel, and all the more so as applicable to those who are close to us, when we are aware of the weakness of their poverty and we have the means to support them.  About this it says “you shall not harden your heart and you shall not be tight-fisted towards your needy brother.” That is to say, you should not allow the character trait of tightfistedness to rule over you, but you should prepare in your heart the character traits of beneficence and of pity in any case, and don’t think that through this you will lack money, because through this Hashem will bless you and His blessing for one short second is better for you than treasure-houses of gold and silver.
