Mitzvah 611) To follow in the ways of Hashem

Parshas Ki Savo

“And you shall walk in his ways!” (Devarim 28:9)

It is a positive commandment that we should do all of our actions in the way which is correct and good with all of our strength, and any affair which is between us and a fellow man should be drawn towards the way of kindness and mercy, as we see in the Torah that this is the way of Hashem and His wish from His creations, in order that they will be able to merit His goodness for He wishes only goodness, and about this it says “And you shall walk in his ways!”.

Chazal said to explain this commandment that just as Hashem is called merciful, so too you should be merciful; Just as Hashem is called the One who favors, so too you should give favors; Just as Hashem is called righteous, so too you should be righteous; Just as Hashem is called holy, so too you should be holy. The whole point is to say that our souls should learn to follow in the good actions and honorable character-traits by which Hashem is described using anthropomorphism to pretend that He uses these character-traits with His creations.

The root of this commandment is obvious, as the commandment and its root are one and the same.

Its laws are also short as the point is that as a general rule a person should choose in all of his affairs and actions, be it in eating, drinking, business, learning Torah, praying, talking and anything else, the good, balanced way, and he should not go to the extremes of the world.

This commandment applies in all places and at all times, both to men and to women. One who does not essay to straighten his ways and conquer his evil inclination and correct his thoughts and deeds to concentrate only on loving Hashem and fulfilling this commandment, has transgressed this commandment.
