Mitzvah 85) – The mitzvah of resting on the Shabbos day

Torah Portion: Mishpatim

But you must stop on the Seventh day (Shemos 23:12).

It is a positive commandment to cease from work on the day of Shabbos, as it is written, But you must stop on the Seventh day (Shemos 23:12). The mitzvah of Shabbos is repeated twelve times throughout Scripture.

Among the roots of the mitzvah is the aim that we be free from all our affairs in honor of the Shabbos day, so that we can affirm to ourselves the belief in the Creation of the world out of nothingness. For this belief is like a chord that pulls all the fundamentals of our Faith along with it. In addition to its serving as a reminder to the Creation of the world, it also serves as a reminder to the miracle of the Exodus from Egypt — that we were slaves there and had no way of ever resting when we wanted to, but God rescued us from their hands and commanded us to rest on the seventh day.

This commandment applies in all places and at all times, to both men and women.
