Preface – 3

This commandment of doing acts of kindness makes peace between Yisrael and their Father in Heaven.

The Sages further said in the Midrash (Rus Rabbah 5:4): How great is the power of those who do kindness, for they do not take shelter in the shadow of dawn, nor in the shadow of the wings of land, nor in the shadow of the wings of the sun, nor the shadow of the wings of animals, nor the shadow of the wings of cherubs, and not in the shadow of the wings of Seraph-angels, but in the shadow of the “One Who spoke and the world came into being,” as is written in Tehillim: How precious is Your kindness, O God! Mankind takes refuge in the shelter of Your wings (Tehillim 36:8).

But, conversely, one who does not act with the traits of kindness and mercy distances himself from the Holy One, and Scripture calls him a ‘wicked person.’ Therefore it is proper to look at what causes a person to refrain from doing kindness, so that the person can know of what to beware.
