Shem Olam / Appendix, Ch. 13 – 109

A person’s life on this world is a type of spiritual sowing, as the verse states, ‘those who sow with tears will reap with joy’, because a person ‘sows’ good deeds in this world and reaps the benefit in the world to come. How big is our field? As long as the minutes we live. Who ever saw someone with vast lush fields as far as the eye can see who plows just the end of the field and is content with that? Surely such a person is a fool! Hashem gives us each as many minutes as we need to acquire what we need to acquire here, and no more. We should not waste our precious time foolishly, for we will be laughing stock forever for our imprudence, but rather ‘sow’ every inch of our ‘field’ carefully while we still have the strength and time.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
