In Tehilim it states, ‘One thing I asked from Hashem, that I will request, to sit in the house of Hashem all the days of my life, to gaze at the pleasantness of Hashem and to visit his chamber’. The verse starts out in past tense, ‘I asked’, and continues in future tense, ‘I will request’. This is because Dovid Hamelech was not like most people whose desires change when their status changes. A poor person will seek a steady job, and if he becomes well-off, he will seek a good investment, and if it does well, he will seek riches. Dovid Hamelech never changed what he sought, whether he was a shepherd in the wilderness or king of Israel, all he wanted was to sit in Beis Hamedrash and learn Torah so he could gaze at Hashem’s glory in the world to come. This is a lesson we can all take to heart, to constantly seek time to learn more, and through this we will merit gazing at the glory of Hashem eternally.
