A person who appreciates life should be very careful not to lose time needlessly. If a person was asked to give some years of his life to someone else, he would normally refuse, and rightfully so. Nothing is dearer to a Jew than life itself, for with the time he was given to live he can attain eternal life. Yet we see that a person who is not careful about his speech wastes hours on end in useless chatter. Even if the conversation has no forbidden speech, just the waste of time is like giving your life to someone else for no good reason.
