Shem Olam / Ch. 13 – 100

It is well known that each Jew has his part of the Torah, because all the souls of all generations stood at Mount Sinai and each neshama received its special share of the Torah. That is why we request in every prayer, ‘and give us our part in the Torah’, and each person who toils in the Torah achieves his portion. This is why each person has a natural attraction to learning a specific subject, as our Sages said, ‘A person only learns where his heart lies’. If a person invests sufficient effort he will surely find the special aspect that Hashem implanted in the Torah just for him.

Therefore we should lament our conduct, for there are Jews who never learn, and there are those who initially learn and then as their families grow they become lax, and there are those who continue learning but waste hours every day that they could have learned and didn’t. If a person knew that his loving father hid a treasure in a certain place for him, he would surely not stop searching it every moment he could. And even if he found part of the treasure it would only spur him on to look for the rest. So it is that each Jew has a special treasure hidden in the Torah that only he can find, and he should not rest until he discovers it in its entirety. If he fails to do so he is like someone who loses what is given to him, as the verse states, ‘If you seek [Torah] like silver and search it like a treasure, then you will attain fear of Hashem and find knowledge of G-d’.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
