Shem Olam / Ch. 21 – 134

[Continuation of advantages to learning in a group over learning in solitude]:

  1. By learning in a group Hashem’s Name is additionally sanctified, as our Sages said, doing mitzvas publicly is [much greater] than doing them privately, so one should try whenever possible to do mitzvas publicly as it increases his merit.

Come see how great the mitzva of learning in groups is, our Sages said that the attribute of strict justice asks Hashem why He favors the Jewish people, and one of the answers is, how can I not favor them when they sit together and learn in groups. Since they do more than the minimum requirement of learning and come together to learn, also Hashem deals with them similarly and shows them favor.

After seeing what a powerful merit learning publicly is, besides making an effort to learn in groups, one should also encourage others to do the same, and Hashem’s name will be sanctified. Lucky is such a person.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
