Shem Olam / Ch. 9 – 114

The verse states, ‘For I gave you a good acquisition, do not forsake my Torah’. The depth of this verse refers to the natural aspiration a person has to learn on a higher level than he is on presently. A child learning chumash wants to learn Rashi, when he learns a Mishna he wants to learn gemara, when he learns gemara he wants to delve into the poskim. No doubt the amoraim wanted to learn on the level of the tannaim, the tannaim wanted to learn on the level of the neviim. This aspiration is proper and recommended. Thus the verse describes how Hashem tells the Jewish people, keep aspiring higher, for the Torah is my Torah, and it is so precious that I learn it myself. Surely we should strive harder to learn something that is lofty beyond our imagination.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
