Shem Olam / Part 2, Ch. 3 – 91

The verses of reproach describe the Jewish people as ‘A deprecate people who are not wise’. The term deprecate seems much worse than not wise, so if a person is deprecate, there is no point in mentioning that he is not wise. But our Sages said, ‘If only they would forsake me and not my Torah, for the light within will bring them back’. If a deprecate person would only learn Torah he would correct his ways, but if he is not wise enough to utilize his time learning, he is hopeless. We must cleave to the Torah because it is our only hope.

“And the utterly undoubtable truth is that if the entire world, from one end to the other, would be absent of our engagement and delving into the Torah, even for one moment, literally, then all the worlds - both upper and lower - would be destroyed instantly, and would turn into utter chaos, chas v’shalom…” (Nefesh Hachaim)
